San Leandro Campuses Open To Public During Non-School Hours

New fencing project makes campuses more accessible and safe.

SAN LEANDRO, Calif., May 24, 2016 - New fencing installed around eight schools in San Leandro is positively impacting campus security and providing the community safe access to the campuses’ outdoor spaces during non-school hours. Fencing projects are complete at Monroe, Muir, McKinley and Bancroft and will be completed at Roosevelt, Washington, Wilson and Garfield campuses by the end of June.

The new wrought iron fencing, with gates, improves the aesthetics of the campus and provides a safe and welcoming environment for students and the community. The newly installed gates lock during school hours and streamline foot traffic thereby requiring visitors to sign in at school offices. All school sites are open for use by the community from before 8 am and after 6 pm on school days, and open all weekends, holidays, and non-school days.

“Our campuses are valuable assets that belong to the entire community. We want our campuses to serve as gathering places, whether it’s basketball games or unstructured playground time - the community should feel at home at all of our schools,” said Superintendent Mike McLaughlin

The fencing projects were paid for out of Measure M funds.
