SLUSD Announces New Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services
San Leandro Unified School District has named Dr. Zarina Zanipatin as the new Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services. Dr. Zanipatin will lead the newly restructured division which now aligns Personnel and Student Services. This new senior leadership role will deepen the district’s implementation of strategic plan goals towards a collaborative and engaged district culture and authentic community engagement.

San Leandro Unified Names Teacher of the Year to Kick Off Certificated Staff Appreciation Week
Last month, the San Leandro Unified school board of trustees passed Resolution 19-23 recognizing May 6-10 as the San Leandro Teacher Appreciation Week. SLUSD Announces Departure of Assistant Superintendent Dr. John Thompson
San Leandro Unified School District announced today that John Thompson, Ed.D has accepted an offer to become the Superintendent of New Haven Unified School District. As such, he will leave his role as Assistant Superintendent, Personnel Services effective July 1, 2019.

San Leandro High School Earns First College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for Achieving High Female Representation in AP Computer Science Courses
SAN LEANDRO, CA – San Leandro High School has earned the first College Board AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science Principles. Schools honored with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award have expanded girls’ access in AP Computer Science courses. Out of more than 18,000 secondary schools worldwide that offer AP courses, SLHS is one of only 685 to accomplish this.

San Leandro Unified Recognizes African American and Latino Academic Achievement
San Leandro Unified School District will host a series of recognition nights for African American and Latino students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement throughout the 2018-19 school year. Almost 1,300 fifth through twelfth grade students from all 12 district schools will be recognized at formal evening events over the next several weeks.

School Counselors Celebrated During National School Counseling Week, Feb. 4–8, 2019
National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 4–8, 2019, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do.

9th Graders Complete 10 Year Plan
When you were a freshman in high school, did you have any idea where you would be in 10 years? One half of the 9th-grade class at San Leandro High School has not only an idea of what the year 2028 will look like for them, but they also created a plan to get there.

Warm Wishes to Families in Need from John Muir Middle School
Students from John Muir Middle School in partnership with the San Leandro Education Foundation (SLED) have been preparing for the holidays by giving back to their community. Students collected over $3,000 in cash donations which were used to purchase gift cards, clothing, toys, blankets, and other holiday items for 22 John Muir families in need.

Measure I Steering Committee Recognized by San Leandro Unified
At Tuesday night’s SLUSD school board meeting, the members of the Measure I Steering Committee were presented with special recognition awards for helping secure overwhelming community support to restore essential school funding and protect the quality of education in the district’s schools. Measure I was approved by voters with a 75.08% approval rate, which is one of the largest percentages of “yes” votes in the district’s history.

SLED Donates $100,000 for SLUSD STEAM labs
Students at Garfield and McKinley Elementary Schools are the fortunate recipients of newly remodeled science facilities, known as STEAM labs, thanks to a $100,000 donation from the San Leandro Educational Foundation (SLED). The donation will be officially presented to the San Leandro Unified School District during the December Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, December 11, at 7:00 pm.

San Leandro High School and Bancroft Middle School Win KNBR Grants
SAN LEANDRO, CA: Last Thursday, San Leandro High and Bancroft Middle Schools were awarded generous donations towards their sports and music programs. World Champion Brandon Crawford and Jim Foley, EVP, and president of Wells Fargo’s Pacific North region presented checks to recipients of the KNBR Step Up to the Plate for Education grants program funded by Wells Fargo at AT&T Park.

San Leandro Unified School District stands with other Bay Area communities in declaring the week of November 11-17 as “Bay Area Unified Against Hate Week”. “Every day our devoted staff shows their deep commitment to inclusivity, unity, and tolerance,” said District Superintendent Dr. Mike McLaughlin, “But we want to stand united with our fellow schools and communities in taking a moment to highlight the need for vigilance against the insidious increase in hate-related behavior. ”

SLUSD Appreciates San Leandro Community for Measure I Support
San Leandro Unified School District is celebrating a big win for their schools today. The San Leandro community came out to support their parcel tax, Measure I, which passed last night at 72.89%. Even though the celebrations are qualified, with 15% of ballots yet to be counted, the district expressed the need to be proactive in appreciating voters who responded positively to their financial need.

SAN LEANDRO, CA: The California Department of Education (CDE) has announced the annual release of the summary reports for the 2017–18 English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC). The public will access to 2017–18 ELPAC reports on the CDE DataQuest reporting website at https://dq.cde.ca.gov/dataquest/. The webpage will display the state, county, district, and school-level ELPAC reports for the 2017–18 administration.

San Leandro Unified School District State of the District Breakfast and Bus Tour Success
Friday, October 12th, San Leandro Unified School District school board trustees, personnel, families and community members came together to celebrate successes from the past year at the annual State of the District address. This year, the event was reorganized as a breakfast and bus tour, in hopes of allowing a more intimate look into the school district, and to provide more of an opportunity to interact with the public.

PSAT is Free in SLUSD
Last Wednesday marked the 4th annual Free PSAT in San Leandro Unified School District. Almost 1,000 10th and 11th-grade students took the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) during the school day on the district’s dime.
