About the AEC

  • The vibrancy of a community is reflected by its commitment to education and the arts. There is no greater testament to San Leandro's appreciation of the visual and performing arts that the San Leandro Art Education Center, which was funded through Measure B, the $109 million school facilities bond passed by San Leandro voters in 2006.

As noted by Deborah Cox, Co-Chair of the Yes on Measure B Committee, Chair of the Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee, and President of the San Leandro Education Foundation (SLED), the Arts Education Center with its 552-seat theater is certainly the "jewel in the crown" of the Measure B projects. This accomplishment is the result of community-wide involvement from start to finish everything from successfully passing the bond to the conceptual design to the actual building of this impressive building.

The SLUSD Art Education Center at San Leandro High School was done with great care and attention to detail, beginning with the 27-member Conceptual Design Team (CDT) formed in March 2007, which offered input in the initial design phase. Later, the Measure B Steering Committee, comprised of representatives from each CDT, continued the input process through the next phase - and the results are stunning! Designed by WLC Architects, this beautiful arts education center contains a lobby with special lighting, walls and glass cases designed to showcase the artwork of student and local artists. It also has a Media Arts, or "black box" theater, for intimate performances, including staged readings and ensemble performances. The main theater has 552 seats, a fly tower with 32 rigging lines, an orchestra pit, a state-of-the-art sound system, as well as a lighting system that will accommodate various types of performances. The dual surface projection screen will accommodate both front and rear projection.

The Arts Education Center also houses the San Leandro Academy of Multimedia (SLAM), where students in grades 10-12 learn skills such as digital photography, animation, web design, video production, 3D graphics and special effects. The SLAM facility offers a Sound Stage that is acoustically designed and equipped for video recording and viewing, enabling students to learn industry skills and techniques. The Control Room mimics a television studio where students learn editing, switching cameras, adjusting and mixing sound, adding titles and graphics, using industry software. There is also a Mixing Room, two computer labs, and a storage room.

Yes, the Arts Education Center is the "jewel in the crown" and will provide a venue for students and community to nurture their artistic talents for many years to come.
