SAN LEANDRO, Calif., June 28, 2016 -- The San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD) Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, to put a $104 million dollar bond measure on the November ballot to fund critical school facility upgrades and improvements.

 

At the board meeting, the School Board approved a facilities plan to be funded by the bond measure. The plan calls for repairing leaky roofs and faulty plumbing and electrical systems; improving heating/ventilation (HVAC) systems; enhancing student safety by updating security lighting, emergency communications, fire alarms and sprinklers; upgrading classrooms, libraries and science labs; replacing deteriorating portables; and adding new facilities and equipment to support instruction in math, science, engineering, arts and technology.

 

“Deep ties, formed over generations, link San Leandrans to their neighborhood public schools. This bond measure will strengthen these ties by providing $70 million to renovate and modernize our elementary schools, making each a shining gem of their neighborhood,” said School Board President Vince J. Rosato. “In addition, the bond allocates $24 million to our middle schools and high school to build upon and extend the modernization work that has been undertaken at these schools. The final $10 million of the bond measure will be spent on facilities and equipment to support math, science, engineering, arts and technology instruction.”

 

If passed on November 8, 2016, the district will issue $104 million at a rate forecasted not to exceed $36 per $100,000 in assessed property value. Annual audits and a citizens oversight committee will ensure the funds are spent in accordance with the ballot proposition.
