Positive Growth in San Leandro USD’s CAASPP Results

SAN LEANDRO, Calif., August 24, 2016 – San Leandro Unified School District announced today their California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results for English language arts/literacy standards and mathematics. The preliminary results indicate positive growth in the district’s second year of administering the new assessments.

The new tests were administered in the spring of 2016 to students in grades three through eight and grade eleven. The CAASPP Summative Assessments are aligned to the Common Core Standards and are intended to measure student progress toward college and career readiness.

In English language arts/literacy, the percentage of students who met or exceeded standard increased five points to 39%. Half of SLUSD’s elementary schools made double digit gains and eight of 12 SLUSD schools met or exceeded the growth made by the state in English language arts/literacy.

In Mathematics, the percentage of students who met or exceeded standard increased three points to 25%. Five out of 12 schools met or exceeded the growth made by the state.

“While we are proud of the positive growth that our students made across the district, we know that we still have a great deal of work to do, especially for our English learner and low income students,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike McLaughlin.

The CAASPP tests measure students’ progress toward rigorous standards that emphasize critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical writing. While these assessments are only one of the many ways SLUSD looks at making gains toward the goals set for students, these results show that the district is moving in the right direction.

The goal for SLUSD is to ensure all students across the district are ready for college and career, and well prepared for their futures. In an effort to help ensure systemic alignment with this goal, the District has focused both their Strategic Action Plan and Local Control Accountability Plan on this outcome. Both plans demonstrate SLUSD’s commitment to initiatives that make contributions to the gains observed on the most recent CAASPP results.

“While we are proud of these positive gains in our second year of administering CAASPP, we continue to work strategically to make this one of the most innovative school districts in the region and remain committed to closing the opportunity gap for all students in the district,” McLaughlin said.

Results on these tests should continue to improve as students have more years of instruction based on the new standards and more familiarity with the new test system.
