SLUSD Announces Departure of Assistant Superintendent Dr. John Thompson

SAN LEANDRO, CA — San Leandro Unified School District announced today that John Thompson, Ed.D has accepted an offer to become the Superintendent of New Haven Unified School District. As such, he will leave his role as Assistant Superintendent, Personnel Services effective July 1, 2019.

Dr. Thompson joined the San Leandro Unified team in 2010, after serving in a variety of leadership roles for the South San Francisco Unified School District. In his role at SLUSD, Dr. Thompson was committed to attracting, recruiting, and retaining highly qualified employees to provide quality educational services. He has also served as the district’s chief negotiator in union relations with the San Leandro Teachers’ Association, the California School Employees Association, and the Teamster/Trades unions. Dr. Thompson is also a graduate of San Leandro High School, having been born and raised in the area.

“Dr. Thompson has been a tremendous leader for SLUSD in providing strong and consistent direction for many years,” said Mike McLaughlin, Ed.D, Superintendent. “He will be sorely missed, but I’m confident in the strong foundation we have in place to take our schools into the future as we build a culture of excellence. We wish John all the best and know he will make an enormous difference for students and staff in New Haven.”

I’m excited to take the strengths and experience I have developed here to serve the New Haven community.”
