9th Graders Complete 10 Year Plan

SAN LEANDRO, CA: When you were a freshman in high school, did you have any idea where you would be in 10 years? One half of the 9th-grade class at San Leandro High School has not only an idea of what the year 2028 will look like for them, but they also created a plan to get there. As the capstone experience in the semester-long College and Career Seminar class at SLHS, students finish the course with thorough research and documentation of who they are, what they want to do in life, and how they are going to get there. The process includes an analysis of life goals, budgeting, lifestyle considerations, interest surveys, and skills assessments.

To breathe life into the process, students are required to articulate their plans to invited community partners in 10 minute, one-on-one interviews and evaluations. Results were given to teachers and students to share with their families. “This is the foundation for how we want our 9th graders to start thinking about their education,” said Career Pathway Coordinator Lisa Jackson, who organized the capstone event, “This experience also strategically informs our academic counselors to better advise students on their future course selections.” Additionally, students who receive a B or better in the course will receive 2 units of college credit from an articulation agreement with Chabot College.
