San Leandro Unified School District stands with other Bay Area communities in declaring the week of November 11-17 as “Bay Area Unified Against Hate Week”. “Every day our devoted staff shows their deep commitment to inclusivity, unity, and tolerance,” said District Superintendent Dr. Mike McLaughlin, “But we want to stand united with our fellow schools and communities in taking a moment to highlight the need for vigilance against the insidious increase in hate-related behavior. ”  The SLUSD school board will be passing a resolution on Tuesday, November 13 to recognize the importance of promoting hate-free environments through education, compassion, and cooperation as the keys to understanding and embracing differences between people.

The school district is collaborating with Not In Our Town, a project of an Oakland-based nonprofit The Working Group, to encourage school-based activities during United Against Hate Week. The Working Group was founded in 1988 in response to the continued occurrences of hate crimes across the country.
