BOARD OF EDUCATION DECLARES DISTRICT CAMPUSES AS SAFE ZONES FOR FAMILIES AND STUDENTS THREATENED BY IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT
SAN LEANDRO, Calif., February 8, 2017 -- The San Leandro Board of Education last night passed a resolution making all campuses a safe zone for students and their families and reinforced the district’s policy mandating that all immigrant students attending San Leandro schools have equal access to an education regardless of their status or the status of their family members. The resolution was passed unanimously on Tuesday night, followed by applause from a full house of community members, educators, union representatives and students.
“The San Leandro School District is a rich and diverse community made up of exceptional students. We want everyone to know our schools are sanctuaries dedicated to learning and development regardless of their religion, cultural background or immigration status,” said Superintendent Mike McLaughlin.
Resolution 17-07 recognizes the current political climate has raised uncertainties and therefore reinforces district policy that all students are eligible for services regardless of their immigration status. The policy outlines specific district procedures to support students and their families throughout their educational journey and requires the district to increase partnerships with community and legal organizations providing resources for families facing deportation or other immigration challenges.
Before a unanimous vote, the Board of Trustees agreed to pass the resolution in the interest of immediate protection status and moved to immediately assign a Board Committee that will revisit the language of the resolution to incorporate feedback and requests heard at the meeting.
