SAN LEANDRO – San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD) Superintendent Dr. Mike McLaughlin released the following statement regarding the decision on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals:

San Leandro Unified School District joins our colleagues across the state and nation in vigorously opposing the decision announced today to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children to legally remain in the country. I am deeply concerned by the implications of this decision, which impacts 200,000 children in California – many of whom are vibrant and vital members of our San Leandro community. At SLUSD, like many school districts and educational organizations across our nation, we celebrate and honor the unique contributions made by immigrants who work and learn in our schools.

As stated clearly in our Resolution 17-07 that was passed in June of this year, the District, alongside the Board of Education, is dedicated to ensuring an education for all children, regardless of their immigration status. We stand by our immigrant families and are steadfast in our commitment to make each and every SLUSD school site a place of safety, learning and support.

Along with community partners, fellow educators and elected officials, SLUSD is committed to taking strong advocacy action, and urging Congress to act quickly to pass legislation that would protect DACA provisions and ease the uncertainty facing so many people in our community.

Please visit our DACA resource page for more information and resources.

Sincerely,
Mike McLaughlin
