SLUSD Board Approves Adoption of New K-12 Math Curriculum

SAN LEANDRO, Calif., April 14, 2016 – At the most recent Board of Education meeting, the trustees unanimously approved the adoption of Eureka Math by Great Minds, which will serve as the math curriculum across the district for all grades starting with the 2016-17 school year.

The process of adopting a new district-wide mathematics curriculum began in the fall of 2015 with the convening of a Math Adoption Selection Committee, comprised of 15 elementary teachers, four middle school teachers, six high school teachers, two district-wide math instructional coaches and a math specialist from the Alameda County Office of Education. The committee determined what was needed in a district-wide math curriculum that would align with Common Core State Standards by creating their own rubric and building a shared lens for quality.

After recommendations from the Mathematics Selection Committee, the SLUSD Education Services Team presented Eureka Math for K-12 as the most viable option for the district to the Board of Education’s Curriculum Committee at their April 6 meeting. The Board Curriculum Committee unanimously agreed and the matter was taken to the full Board of Education for a vote on April 12.

“The continuity and consistency of adopting a cohesive K-12 program was an important factor in selecting Eureka from the committee’s top two recommendations. There is a real benefit to our students being familiar with format and style year to year across their entire educational experience in the district,” said Director of Teaching, Learning and Educational Equity Sonal Patel. “Additionally, we found that Eureka Math was the only program that actually emerged originally in response to the new standards and felt that it will best support teachers in meeting the demands of Common Core-aligned math instruction.”

In addition to the adoption of Eureka Math, the Board has also approved a series of professional development opportunities for teachers over the course of the the next two years and the purchase of supplemental hands-on materials that will assist in the roll-out of this new curriculum.
