SLUSD Offers PSAT to All Sophomores

672 San Leandro 10th Graders Take Exam Free of Charge

SAN LEANDRO, Calif., October 14, 2015 -- All 10th grade students at San Leandro High School took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) for free today. Historically students have had to pay to take the exam, which typically costs $15. This year, 672 sophomores took the exam versus 116 last year when students and families had to pay for the exam themselves.

The PSAT is typically taken as preparation for the SAT which many students begin taking their junior year and is an integral part of the college application process for many four-year colleges. “By ensuring all students are afforded this crucial first step in success for collegiate standardized acceptance testing, we hope to better pave their pathway to college and career readiness,” said San Leandro High School Vice Principal Dan DiCamillo.

The San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD) paid for all 10th grade students to take the PSAT; funds were allocated for this purpose in alignment with the district’s three year strategic action plan to allow for greater equity and education access across the district.

“We are proud to provide all 10th graders access to taking the PSAT on campus. Our district leaders, educators, school board, and community value preparing all of our students for college and career success,” said Sonal Patel, SLUSD’s Director of Teaching, Learning, and Educational Equity. “This is one of the many steps we are taking to promote more access and equity to college-going preparation.

The district plans to continue financing the PSAT in subsequent years. Additionally, in the spring of 2016 the SAT exam will be offered free of charge to all 11th grade students.
