Board of Education Approves Secondary Redesign Recommendations

SAN LEANDRO, Calif., January 12, 2016 – At this evening’s Board of Education meeting, the trustees voted 5-0 to approve the Secondary Redesign recommendations put forward by the district. The approved recommendations – which were first presented to the Board of Education at a December 15, 2015 Work Study Session – are:

  1. John Muir Middle School and San Leandro High School (SLHS) will adopt a block schedule by the 2017-18 school year.
  2. The Fred T. Korematsu campus will be repurposed for use by all SLHS students starting with the 2017-18 school year.
  3. The district will create and implement personalized advisory, intervention and mentorship programs for all secondary students starting with the 2016-17 school year and continuing throughout the 2017-18 school year.
All of the approved recommendations incorporate strong professional development and support plans, in addition to effective operational plans to ensure successful implementation.

“Teachers need time and space organized in a way that supports deeper learning. We look forward to collaborating with and supporting teachers in creating those spaces and to working closely with our administrators at all four secondary sites to ensure effective implementation of structures that support that deeper, more personalized learning,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Rosanna Mucetti, who spearheaded SLUSD’s efforts for Secondary Redesign. “Our students will greatly benefit from secondary programs that are more aligned to the new demands of our standards, our assessment practices and expectations for technology integration.”

The adoption of the final recommendations is the culmination of months of work that started with in the spring of 2015. A committee was convened comprising close to 30 educators from different SLUSD secondary sites. The district also held three community forums to update families on potential changes and to seek input. During this period, surveys were also developed and deployed including those for staff, families and students. District staff met with secondary educators and staff within the district before Dr. Mucetti presented the committee’s preliminary recommendations to the Board of Education in December 2015.
