SLUSD Celebrates “Inclusive Schools Week” December 3-7

November 30, 2018

San Leandro Unified School District is pleased to announce the 18th Annual Inclusive Schools Week will be celebrated December 3-7, 2018, throughout the district’s classrooms, schools, and communities. This year’s theme, “Kaleidoscope of Friends”, was chosen to reflect the beauty of diversity in our students. Inclusive Schools Week celebrates the progress schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to all students, including those who are marginalized due to disability, gender, ethnicity, geography, and language. It also provides an important opportunity for educators, students, and families to discuss what else needs to be done to ensure that schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children.

Prior to the Thanksgiving break, the SLUSD School Board adopted Resolution 18-50 in support of Inclusive Schools Week, to show their commitment to inclusivity throughout the district. “Our goal is to provide a quality education for every member of our increasingly diverse student population,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike McLaughlin, “This week is an opportunity to showcase our progress, but our implementation of inclusive practices is a daily effort.” Examples of some of the activities happening in SLUSD classrooms include having students use adaptive classroom materials to experience firsthand the challenges faced by children with disabilities.
