• Weekly Announcement  Health 9, Ms. Stanley, Week #11 Home Learning, June 1-4

Well, we made it, this is our LAST week of school! It is actually "Finals week", but no final group project sadly..it is best done in person in class, so instead,  I prepared a Final Reflection (Google Form) Required assignment! I added a few slides of some quotes to send them on their way, in lieu of the usual interactive classroom activity I do where theft all share their health goals, their gratitudes, and a few other things.

The Google Forms questions are about their experience during COVID related to learning and social, and a few regarding the health class topics. I was curious about their learning process being at home, on-line.

Thank you parents, for whatever you did to engage your children in learning during this unusual time, and juggle jobs, younger children, home- life challenges, all of it.  It certainly had it’s challenges, and it’s joys. I worked very hard to re-create each lesson to be meaningful, not too long, and pertinent to their lives. As always, I hope students learned to learn, not for a grade, and especially in Health, there are so many topics of pertinence to their lives right now, and in the coming years. As I say live in class often: “I hope that you learned how to be an advocate for self and others related to health. “That is my dream!

I wish them joy, success, and positive health in mind, body and spirit along their way, and certainly look forward to seeing them live again next fall. I need to return their About Me pictures! And, I owe them a LIVE real tasting of Green Smoothies! (I shared a Zoom video back in April in case you want to see it)

    To Health and Wellness,

    Ms. Kim Stanley

  • Announcement for Week #7 Health 9, Home Learning, May 4-May 8

*All student work is now being graded Pass/Inc.

    Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week #7 of HomeLearning! 5 topics below:

    1. The Sexual Health Unit is starting this week, for 4 weeks, May 4-May 29.

We sent you a Parent Notification Letter via Parent Square on Mon. April 27 with a link to a private Google Classroom we created specifically for you to review the 3R’s Sexual Health virtual curriculum which we announced will be starting this week.  (The program also has Grades 5-6, Gr.8 Programs). Please read the letter sent to you via Parent Square 4/27 from Health Teachers to get the information to access the curriculum, which has guidelines and important information to read before your child starts the unit.   https://www.parentsquare.com

    2. Support: We are sharing with you two special documents called Student Support Services- Quick Links-7th grade+ and Student Support Services Full List for both students and families for your reference. We will be posting it daily to Google Classroom for students to access there. For example, our Peer Health Educators created an amazing site for resources and questions that is interactive too, called “Lets’ Talk: Your Health”.

I encourage you to take the opportunity during the Sexual Health unit to discuss this topic with your teen as it feels appropriate, as it can sometimes be challenging to navigate this topic between parents and teens. Be sure to use the resources to find ways to check in and connect.

    3. Grading Adjustments: I will explain the changes to clarify some oddities in both Aeries and Google Classroom that have been confusing, but are now all sorted out. I will explain live to students Monday and Tuesday during their scheduled class hour (in the suggested block schedule we were given, also on the SLHS website).  This will be the last LIVE Zoom Class Meeting until the last week of school June 1-4.  During the Sexual Health unit, we will only have recorded messages to students due to the privacy issues of teaching this topic virtually.

    4. Zoom Class Meetings this week: I posted a sign-up list for the meetings to Google Classroom on Friday. If students do not register on the sign-up list (by full name), and do not attend, (read: sleeping in!), they will need to listen to the Screencast Audio announcement I created and will post to Google Classroom Monday May 4 BEFORE they begin ANY lessons.  I hope they can attend LIVE so we can also connect and see the smiles :) The meetings are 25 minutes for each class. Students may always e-mail me and sign up for an office hour with me 1:1 or phone me.

    5. Connecting for Fun and…..connection!: On Friday, I shared a link for students to join the Remind App so we could  send messages more efficiently during this last unit. They will need to sign up; https://www.remind.com/join/fe969bk.  Ms. Stanley 👍🏋🏼‍♂️🌎☀️🥦🤸🏽‍♀️👏

Announcement for Week #6 Health 9, Home Learning,

    April 27-May 1

*All student work is now being graded Pass/Inc.

Dear Families, 4 topics below, please read all!

    1. I have scheduled Zoom class meetings via Google Classroom for Monday and Tuesday this week  (and will for next week also) DURING the suggested schedule times we received from the District. (Mon: Per 1,3,5, Tues, Per 2,4,6). The meetings are designed to connect, review over the lesson for the week, and to give support and answer any questions about the week’s assignments (or past week). The meetings are 20-minutes each, 3 per hour, and allow a max. of 12 students per meeting for optimum connection with students. They must register in advance on a sign-in sheet- all on Google Classroom. I will provide the Zoom link on Monday, 15 minutes  before the meetings. Students do NOT need a Zoom account in order to attend. I hope you can "strongly encourage" your child to attend! If not, they can always e-mail me with questions, or call me on my computer-based phone (510) 606-4022, ext 2147) as I have been doing for a month now. (kimstanley@slusd.us). Yes, a real "live" class and interaction is what I miss, so this is the replacement for now!

    2. We are in the last week of Substance Abuse Prevention Unit. The topics have been: Teen Brain and Addiction, Tobacco, Vaping, Alcohol, and this week Cannabis, Prescription Drugs and Overdose (excellent video to watch for parents also!) and, I created an open family assignment from the “Natural High” website that you can do to engage with your teen on the topic of Substance use, so hopefully you can make a connection and have some open conversation on this important topic. “It takes a village”..and the research shows that teens who talk with their parents about substance use are more likely to resist drugs. Communication is key!

    3. Quarter grades were submitted on Saturday. They were the usual grading scale A-F, and 4th Quarter is Pass/Incomplete. As I return assignments to students submitted via Google Classroom, their “grade” of Pass/Inc is in the comments section, since GC will not allow letters only #’s. Also, not that in Aeries, I enter a “0”( Zero) if they turned it in and received a “Pass”, and it is BLANK if not turned in, or an Incomplete. (Aeries also does not allow a letter entry in the case of a point-based grading system). 4th quarter grades will be averaged with 3rd quarter, so encourage your scholar to keep up on the work, and they can let me now if they need any extra time.

    4. MOST IMPORTANT-BEST for LAST! We (both Health 9 teachers) have added a shortened, simplified version of the 3R's Sexual Health Program-in a Virtual Google Classroom format provided by Advocates for Youth for your review. Refer to the parent letter attached below for the details of how to access the curriculum, as well as specified, important guidelines to follow for students doing this unit virtually and at home. We will use this version of the 3R’s program to base our lessons on in the Sexual Health unit for the next 4 weeks.

*You may also still access the on-line 3R's Sexual Health High School Curriculum that we shared earlier in the year to the parents/guardians of all 9th grade Health classes. (The most recent notice for this was sent to you on March 9 via Parent Square, the week before school closed on March 13.)  The announcement stated the start date of the unit for March (which we delayed to May 4 due to the school closure and to await a virtual version), and provided you with access to review the materials. Here is the link again for the on-line 3R’s that we use when in the regular physical classroom setting, and is the framework for the Virtual Google Classroom 3R’s program we will be using : 3R’s: Rights Respect Responsibility by Advocates for Youth, High School version  3Rs Curriculum - Rights, Respect … 3Rs Curriculum - Rights, Respect …

Thank you for whatever support you can offer to your child(ren) as we move along in a virtual classroom world; it still feels surreal.I hope you are coping and getting support YOU need as a parent!

Now you can open the attached letter please for details! I pasted the letter below in the body of this notice in case you cannot open the PDF. You can also use the Spanish/Chinese translation tool at the end of this doc, or read the attached Chinese/Spanish PDF's*

    To Health,

    Ms. Kim Stanley

COMPREHENSIVE SEXUAL HEALTH AND HIV PREVENTION EDUCATION

PARENT NOTIFICATION LETTER for moving Comprehensive Sexual Health Education to distance learning:

    April 27, 2020

Dear San Leandro High School Parent / Guardian

    NOTE: COVID-19 Distance Learning

Due to the circumstances of shelter in place during Spring 2020, comprehensive sexual health education will be delivered in a distance learning format. Our district will be using the 3R’s Curriculum we use in class in a modified, digital student version, and will not include the discussion and interactive activities we normally do in a class setting. The instruction will be delivered from Monday, May 4 through Friday, May 27. The Curricula is adapted for distance/virtual instruction from Advocates for Youth, who created the 3R’s program. We will use our Google Classroom platform we have been using since the school closure on March 13 to deliver the materials and have students submit their work. We will have a weekly scheduled Zoom check-in meeting or posted announcement with each class to review the learning goals for that week’s lessons. Due to this distance learning format, it is important for families to ensure that:

    • Students have headphones or earbuds, or a private space away from younger children to participate in these lessons.
    • Students do not record or distribute any of the instructional material.

Instructional materials are available for review by parents/guardians via a separate Google Classroom. If you are interested in material review, go to classroom.google.com, and join with this code: g3zvmfa

The Google Classroom is titled For Parent Preview: 3R's Virtual High School Sex Education by Advocates for Youth.

Please email your Health and Safety teacher with any further questions: Ms. Stanley: kimstanley@slusd.us Ms.Swaim: sswaim@slusd.us

California state law, the California Healthy Youth Act, requires that comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education be provided to students at least once in middle school or junior high school and once in high school, starting in grade 7. At San Leandro High School, we teach the sexual health unit in Health and Safety, grade 9.

Instruction must encourage students to communicate with parents, guardians or other trusted adults about human sexuality. Instruction must be medically accurate, age-appropriate and inclusive of all students. It must include the following:

    • Information about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including transmission, FDA approved methods to prevent HIV and STIs, and treatment
    • Information that abstinence is the only certain way to prevent unintended pregnancy and HIV and other STIs, and information about value of delaying sexual activity
    • Discussion about social views of HIV and AIDS
    • Information about accessing resources for sexual and reproductive health care
    • Information about pregnancy, including FDA approved prevention methods, pregnancy
outcomes, prenatal care, and the newborn safe surrender law
    • Information about sexual orientation and gender, including the harm of negative gender stereotypes
    • Information about healthy relationships and avoiding unhealthy behaviors and situations

You may access a copy of the California Healthy Youth Act (California Education Code Sections 51930-51939) in PDF form here: CA Healthy Youth Act  This instruction will be provided by the San Leandro High School Health and Safety teachers. No outside guest speakers will be used at this time during the COVID Shelter In Place.

Parents can choose to opt their child out of instruction by State law. If you do not want your student to participate in comprehensive sexual health or HIV prevention education, they will be assigned an alternative, health related topic assignment each week to complete and submit via Google Classroom to their teacher..

Parents can email their opt-out request to the administration by May 3, 2020. We will begin the instruction on May 4, 2020.  Contact either Michelle Gonzalez de Jesus, Assistant Principal at: mgonzalezdejesus@slusd.us  or Dr. Reginald Richardson, Principal at: regrichardson@slusd.us and they will inform us of your request.

    Sincerely,

Your SLHS Health and Safety Teachers,

  • My Weekly ANNOUNCEMENT:

Monday. April 13-April 17. All student work is now being GRADED.

    Dear Families,

Welcome to Week #4 of Home Learning. The Substance Abuse Prevention unit begins! We just finished Nutrition, in the past 3 weeks of optional, non-graded lessons. Thanks to all who did the work and submitted it via Google Classroom! And those that could not, no worries, you can still go back and just take a look at the slides and enjoy. I would like to ask you, parents, and students, to go the LAST lesson posted Friday April 10, which is my first, and for-fun Zoom video lesson on “How to Make a Green Smoothie!” Since we missed that lesson live! You can have it virtual! The assignment was to make green smoothies as a family! If you can! If not, to watch it anyway, and just make an effort to increase your uptake of those rainbow colored foods: fruits, vegetables for vitamins, minerals, and fiber, so you can support your immune health! (No, rainbow colors does NOT include Skittles or Fruit Loops, sorry!)

Since official grading begins, make sure your scholar is staying on top of the program; see below.

I hope you are well, and adjusting to the “new normal” we have all taken on. I know for me I am an official  “ZOOMbie” from all the computer time. Alas, I am taking stretch breaks, short walks, doing lots of yoga and fitness classes on Zoom, and going to nature to breathe and re-charge and enjoy the 3-D world to balance some of that 2-D world!  (I am using the COVID-19 Safe requirements- mask, physical distance). I hope you can find some balance, and get out too!

I have posted to the Learning Folder on the SLHS website, and will post assignments to Google Classroom weekly: this week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday so students don’t get overwhelmed looking at all of the assignments at once! "Pace yourself!" Students need to go to their respective class period as they always have, and log in to their class with their district e-mail and Password in order to access the site and the lessons. I will be posting a weekly notice, and other pertinent announcements there daily, so use Google Classroom as your go-to for Health 9 Information.

*All students, guardians/parents need to read my Google Classroom post for Mon. 4/13 for important updates on: Communication guidelines, New Grading Policy, and the ever-changing Technology world related to Home Learning (Post on 4/10 20, and updated 4/13).

I (and all teachers) have a new Phone Contact # during COVID-19 Home Learning. It rings via my school computer, and both parents and students can leave me a Voice Message:

    Contact #: (510) 606-4022, ext. 2147.

  • Mon. April 6, Week #3 of Home Learning!

This is an Announcement, posted to our class' Google Classroom, then a post to GC with the assignments will follow! (I also posted the assignments to the SLHS teacher Home Learning Folder). I will keep this post at the top on GC  for this week, April 6-10. Starting next week, ALL assignments will be posted to Google Classroom (as always), so please go there. So on this Teacher page in the future, I will only post a brief message or Announcements.

Greetings my amazing scholars of Health! (and parents).

I hope you are staying HEALTHY in mind, body and spirit. Yes, I DO miss your smiling faces, and shooting hoops, and seeing you rolling into class, but I do NOT miss telling you to remember to "turn off your phones, and put them away!" But I will continue to say, "TURN ON YOUR BRAIN!"If you don't use it, you lose it!".

I went to the classroom last week to gather things (see photos on GC post!); it was so stark and eerie, surreal. I changed the calendar on the board hoping we might come back May 4. But now we all know, we are not retuning in Physical form :( PS: Hedgy the Hedgehog is still missing, can you help return him to the class?)

I decided to NOT grade the Wk #8/9 Daily Q (A#25) that you all turned in that Friday, March 13 before we left. I noted that on Aeries in the description of the assignment. But I DID and will grade the lesson we started that day, and I posted to GC that afternoon to finish it, A#26, "Additives, Chemicals and Preservatives in Foods", so make sure you get to that one and submit it if you can. Or, just read over some of the investigations (links);  the students that did it learned a lot!

Welcome to Home Learning, Week #3, for the JOY of learning! It is the end of our Nutrition Unit, and I was planning to make you all Green Smoothies at the end! Perhaps I will upload a video of how to make them (it is so easy) and you can watch it and try it at home if you have a blender. In the meantime, eat your fruit and veggies! :)

I returned and commented to all of you who submitted work via GC over the last 2 weeks, I applaud you for whatever challenges you had in order to do that. I am so pleased you could do some learning in this challenging time! FYI for Aeries: what I entered for all those non-graded assignments, including upcoming this week, is a "0" (zero) for those that turned it in, blank for those who did not. All I could enter was a "0" without confusing the program, meaning in this case of Home Learning, that I am simply acknowledging that you submitted the assignment. No grade, just acknowledgement. I made a comment, and returned it, as I will this week (and in the future when grading starts Mon. April 13, there will be points assigned). Those that did not do the work, do not worry, hopefully you can just scan the slides, the information, and learn a few things!

This week you can do the 2 lessons WITH YOUR FAMILY! That's right parents, do get involved on these two!

Teachers are busy this week learning new technology to integrate to our lessons, attending on-line webinars, organizing for allof you, so I will continue to post on Google Classroom as I always have, so keep posted! And please be forgiving if things don't always work perfectly! We are all learners, yes, me too! All work will need to be submitted via CLASSWORK where I post it.

If you need to turn anything in late, please e-mail me: ALWAYS put in the subject line: Your FULL name, Period, and a topic (for all correspondence). I am getting many e-mails, and am sorting them by period, Thank you!

I posted the two assignments for this week in the next post, but will keep this announcement at the top for this week.

It's good to be with you.. at least digitally! Enjoy the photos I took when I went back to the classroom last week!

    To Health and wellness,

    Ms. Stanley
