Wonders is designed to foster a love of reading in all children.  Through exploration of texts and daily development of their skills as readers, writers, speakers, and active listeners, students experience the power of literacy.  Our focus on teaching the whole child - and every child - prepares students to be lifelong learners and critical thinkers.

 

Students are assigned a Reading Book every Monday.  They are to read, listen, and take a quiz on the RAZ kids website.  They are also given a Reading Packet that goes with their Reading Book.  The packet is due by Friday.  It is recommended that students complete one page of the packet a day.  The teacher will meet with students in small groups throughout the week for focused instruction and extra help on completing the work.

 

Every day after lunch students are given 30 minutes of Silent Sustained Reading.  Books are chosen based on students' ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) levels and interest.  Students read their books in class as well as 30 minutes as homework.  After students finish reading their books, they take quizzes on the books in class.  Families please keep track of their reading at home daily using the Reading Log found in their Homework Folders.  Encourage them to read and take quizzes as much as possible.  It might help to reward your child after completing a book and passing the quiz on it.  Students get Friday Shout-outs for reading and passing quizzes that week.

 

Compass Learning aligns directly to the STAR Renaissance Reading test.  Students are given learning pathways based on the students strengths and needs.   

 

For non-fiction articles and current events, encourage students to visit the newsela website and read the latest news and articles on topics they are interested in.
