Hello all,Welcome back to school! I hope you all enjoyed the time away from school during the holidays. I am certainly coming back refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of our year. Coming up on the 21st - 24th we will have early dismissal to conduct our second round of assessments. Look for an invitation to choose a time for bringing your child back to school so we can complete these assessments. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns as we move through our second half of the year.Wishlist: Let me know if you plan to bring fruit or veggies one day for snack, so I can plan accordingly.Scholastic: Order any time with our class code QBY6B.ELA: We are continuing learning the letters with their sounds. This week we are learning the E sound with F, R, B, and L coming up. We are learning the sight word are with the words he, with, is, and little coming up.Unit 5: What kinds of things can you find growing in nature? What do living things need to grow? How do living things change as they grow? What kinds of things grow on a farm?Unit 6: How do weather and seasons affect us?How are the seasons different?Focus letter(s): EeLetters and sounds learned: M, A, S, P, T, I, N, C, O, D, H.Sight words learned: I, can, the, we, see, a, like, to, and, go, you, do, my.Reading: We are practicing rereading to understand something if it didn't make sense the first time. We are also talking about the main idea and key details in a book we are reading. Students can practice visualizing by making "I was able to picture in my mind..." statements about stories. Continue to practice asking and answering questions before, during, and after reading books at home. Continue to sound out words like pan using the sounds your child already knows. As we add more sounds, they will sound out more words. You can help your child practice this skill at home! Go to Raz-Kids, Reading Room, Early Reading, and then Decodable Books. Enjoy!Writing: We are continuing drawing and writing about our lives. Today we wrote about our winter break. We will also continue to write about books we have been reading and move towards writing opinion pieces. We will also write informative texts to tell about what we know and explain how to do certain things. Talk with your child about what they want to share with the class and write about. We are attempting to write whole sentences by starting with sentence frames, such as I went ___. We then add sight words and other words from our word wall and sound out the words we don't know. Ex: I went to the p_c. (park). We are moving towards a goal of two complete sentences and drawings with lots of labels.Science: Go for a walk and look at the trees. What do you notice about how they have changed? Talk about the weather on the way to school. How is it the same or different each day? Talk about the seasons. What animals can you see now that it is winter?
Math: We are finished with Module 1 and 2. We have recently covered flat shapes (like squares, triangles, hexagons, and circles) and solids (including spheres, cones, cylinders, and cubes). Continue practicing counting and writing numbers at home and asking your child what is one more/less questions. Ask about flat and solid shapes they see around them.We are working on Module 3, which deals with measurement by comparing length, weight, and capacity. Today we investigated and compared the weight of different objects using heavier than and lighter than.
Next is Module 4, where we will be moving into addition and subtraction by starting to take numbers apart and put numbers together.
We have a field trip to Monterey Bay Aquarium coming up on March 19th where we will need volunteers. Please fill out the volunteer packet and get the process started, if you plan to chaperone. We will have space for about 5 chaperones on our bus. Thanks again. As always, please reach out with any questions, comments or concerns. Have a good afternoon,
