Beatty, Cameron

After graduating from Cal State Hayward in 1997, I pursued studying Spanish in Guatemala to better equip myself for youth work in the Bay Area.  I ended up staying in Guatemala for six years.  Throughout this period, I continued studying Spanish, volunteered at an orphanage, taught adult ESL, and worked as a middle school math teacher. 

After returning to the Bay Area in 2003, I aspired to continue working in the field of education.  Over the next year and a half I completed my multiple subject BCLAD teaching credential through Cal State Hayward.  For the next four years I worked at Havenscourt Middle School in Oakland as the core ELD-Social Studies teacher for students at the beginning and intermediate levels of English acquisition.  For the past thirteen years I have been working at Jefferson Elementary School as the fourth grade bilingual teacher.

My life experiences in multicultural settings and my work with children of all ages and walks of life have allowed me to relate to a diverse cross-section of students.  I have found particular fulfillment and joy in working with students who have recently commenced their journeys toward second language acquisition and biliteracy.  Teaching provides me an opportunity to help prepare young people to better adapt to the challenges of their prospective futures.
