Measures of Student Achievement

Teachers assess student progress using a variety of strategies including, paper and pencil tests, oral questioning, projects, presentations and portfolios. Student mastery is also assessed through the San Leandro Unified School District quarterly assessments in English/Language Arts and math as well as the annual testing.  English Learners take the California English Language Development Test annually.

Report cards are issued at the end of each quarter and mailed home to parents.  Midway through the quarter teachers notify parents of concerns by issuing a progress report for any student are at risk of receiving a D or F grade, or of receiving an Unsatisfactory citizenship mark.

Homework

Homework is the opportunity for student to practice and extend skills learned in class.  Our teachers follow the board policy regarding homework.  Sixth graders complete 30 to 60 minutes nightly, and seventh and eighth graders complete 90 minutes per subject per week.  Bancroft Middle School has adopted a modified block schedule, therefore classes meet four times per week.

School Schedule

The school year starts in late August and ends in mid-June.  Each Tuesday and Wednesday students are dismissed at 2:00 p.m. so that teachers can work together.  The campus is open at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast in the cafeteria and for the A period Band class.  After school the ASES program provides students with supervised activities including homework help, enrichment classes and intramural athletics.  The ASES program closes at 6:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. Extracurricular Activities

Most of the clubs on campus meet during lunch with adult supervision.  Athletic teams typically practice and compete after school.  Schedules are distributed by each coach at the beginning of the season.  Students who participate in special events such as the school play will rehearse after school under the direct supervision of the director. 

Campus Safety

The campus is secured by over 75 certificated and classified staff members. Administrators and campus supervisors are actively supervising the campus between 8:00 a.m and 3:20 p.m.  Teachers and other staff participate in campus supervision before school, during nutrition break, and after school. 

Specialized Program/Staff

Bancroft has additional staff outside of the classroom to support students including, three full-time counselors, a librarian and library assistant, a nurse one day per week, a part-time speech and language specialist and psychologist.  In addition, we have a Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Specialist and English Learner Specialist. Students are also supported by six Instructional Assistants who work directly with English Learners and students in Special Education.
