California Healthy Kids Survey

What is California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS)?

  • The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is an anonymous, confidential survey of school climate and safety, student wellness, and youth resiliency. It will be administered between the dates of January 27 to February 14. All 5th to 11th-grade students are being asked to participate. It enables schools and communities to collect and analyze data regarding local youth health risks and behaviors, school connectedness, school climate, protective factors, and school violence.

The CHKS is part of a San Leandro’s Tobacco Use Prevention Education grant program (TUPE) and this information is used to guide efforts to reduce student risk behaviors and build schools that are drug-free, safe and supportive environments for all students. Results will also drive decision making for the district and school sites.

Participation in the survey is voluntary and the survey is anonymous. No names or any other identifying information is connected to the answers except for the name of the school. Parents need to notify the school if they do not want their child to participate in the survey. Students can also opt-out of the survey.
