December 2-6 is Inclusive Schools Week in SLUSD

December 2, 2019

San Leandro Unified School District is pleased to announce the 19th Annual Inclusive Schools Week will be celebrated December 2-6, 2019, throughout the district’s classrooms, schools, and communities. This year, the Inclusive Schools Week’s theme is “Charting the Course for Inclusive Schools.” Inclusive Schools Week celebrates the progress schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to all students, including those who are marginalized due to disability, gender, ethnicity, geography, and language. It also provides an important opportunity for educators, students, and families to discuss what else needs to be done to ensure that schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children.

The SLUSD School Board adopted Resolution 19-52 in support of Inclusive Schools Week, to show their commitment to inclusivity throughout the district. “Our goal is to provide a quality education for every member of our increasingly diverse student population,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike McLaughlin, “This week is an opportunity to showcase our progress, but our implementation of inclusive practices is a daily effort.” Examples of some of the activities happening in SLUSD classrooms include having students use adaptive classroom materials to experience firsthand the challenges faced by children with disabilities.
