As we embark on what is traditionally a celebratory week in San Leandro Unified, I know that our collective hearts are unimaginably heavy right now. I have to ask myself, how do we celebrate the close of this already difficult school year, when we are outraged at yet another tragically senseless killing of a black man at the hands of a white police officer?

Message from Superintendent McLaughlin on California’s May Budget Revision
As you may be aware, Governor Newsom released the May Revision to the current California budget today. Alongside every school superintendent in Alameda County, and across California, we have been preparing to translate what a stark financial forecast means for our children. We know that California already ranks among the lowest in educational funding. With the budget reductions shared today, schools are being asked to accomplish an increasingly daunting task, but these numbers are an essential step in reopening our schools.

SLUSD Closure Update - School Facilities Closed For the Remainder of the School Year
From the onset of this public health crisis, we have pledged not to reopen our school buildings until it is safe to do so. Today, with that important reality in mind, Alameda County Superintendent of Schools, L. Karen Monroe stated that all K-12 schools in Alameda County will remain closed for in-person instruction for the rest of the 2019-20 school year to protect the health of our students, staff, and our entire community.

SLUSD Closure Update 3.25.20 - School Facilities Closed Through May 1
As we have anticipated, the closure period for SLUSD schools has been extended through May 1 to continue critical steps necessary to protect our students and staff from the rapidly developing public health crisis confronting our community. This was a unified, regional decision by local public health agencies and county superintendents to extend school closures to slow the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) to the maximum extent. Under this current order, SLUSD schools are projected to reopen on Monday, May 4.

SLUSD Closure Update 3.18.20
My staff and I continue to do our utmost to support our community through this difficult, distressing, and very uncertain time. Staying connected in any way possible is more important than ever as we are required to adapt our social structures to ensure everyone’s safety. Additionally, we are receiving guidance from state officials that indicates our closure period may be significantly longer than anticipated. As we learn more about what that could look like for SLUSD, we are planning to update you weekly. However, we are also committed to updating you more frequently as it will likely become necessary. -
All SLUSD Schools Closed from Monday, March 16 to April 3
After much deliberation with our neighboring school districts, and out of an abundance of concern for all members of our community, we have decided to take strong preventative action by closing all SLUSD schools to students beginning Monday, March 16 to April 3. In order to minimize disruption to student learning, Spring Break will be moved up to the week of March 30. School will resume on April 6. Please note this is a change from our current district calendar. -
SLUSD Non-Essential Events Postponed Through April 13 – Schools Remain Open
We are sharing the most updated information regarding developments with COVID-19 as it relates to our community. As anticipated, the Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD) announced new recommendations and guidance to protect residents from the increased possibility of community transmission. Additionally, the California Department of Public Health issued recommendations for the postponement of all non-essential gatherings in coordination with guidance from the California Governor’s office.

SLUSD Wins Prestigious CSBA Golden Bell Award for Equity
SAN LEANDRO, CA: The San Leandro Unified School Board has received a distinguished, highly competitive California School Boards Association (CSBA) Golden Bell Award for significantly increasing access and equity in Advanced Placement programs at San Leandro High School. SLUSD was one of only 52 school districts in California to receive this annual award, out of several thousand entries from across the state.

December 2-6 is Inclusive Schools Week in SLUSD
San Leandro Unified School District is pleased to announce the 19th Annual Inclusive Schools Week will be celebrated December 2-6, 2019, throughout the district’s classrooms, schools, and communities. This year, the Inclusive Schools Week’s theme is “Charting the Course for Inclusive Schools.”

SLUSD School Board Votes to Place School Improvement Bond on March Ballot
The San Leandro School Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution to place a $198 million dollar bond measure on the March 2020 Presidential Primary election ballot during their board meeting on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.

San Leandro Unified Shows Significant Growth in CAASPP Report
The recent release of the California Assessment of Students Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Summary Report has highlighted some significant signs of positive growth for San Leandro Unified students. SLUSD showed the most improvement in math scores of all school districts in Alameda County, with an overall increase of 3.1% of students meeting or exceeding California state standards. English Language Arts (ELA) scores are also on the rise throughout the district, with an overall increase of 4%.

On Friday, October 11, San Leandro Unified Superintendent Dr. Mike McLaughlin delivered his annual State of the District address to a packed house in the San Leandro High School gymnasium. With the current school year marking the end of a three-year improvement plan, McLaughlin’s speech featured impressive academic achievements and facilities enhancements.

Possible Public Safety Power Shutoff Event - October 9th
Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) is alerting the public to possible planned power outages due to gusty winds and dry conditions that are increasing fire danger in our community. They will potentially be taking proactive measures on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week by turning off power for public safety.

SLUSD Celebrates Completion of Measure J1 Heating and Air Conditioning Project
On a day forecast to reach temperatures over 90 degrees, civic leaders and school district officials celebrated an important renovation milestone for San Leandro Unified. The district has completed installation of new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units in all SLUSD schools.

Sports Medicine Class in Biomedical Pathway Receives Free CPR/AED Certification
Almost 50 students from the Sports Medicine class in the San Leandro High School Biomedical Pathway received a free CPR/AED certification during the school day.

Over 75 Students Complete SLUSD Summer Internship Program
Over 75 students completed the annual Summer Internship 101 course offered through the San Leandro High School Career Pathways program and the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce. Since the program’s inception, increasing numbers of high school students are taking advantage of the opportunity to get academic credit through real-world experience at local job sites and receive industry mentorship from local companies in San Leandro and the greater Bay Area.
