San Leandro Unified Delivers on Promise of Progress

SAN LEANDRO, CA: On Friday, October 11, San Leandro Unified Superintendent Dr. Mike McLaughlin delivered his annual State of the District address to a packed house in the San Leandro High School gymnasium. With the current school year marking the end of the latest three-year improvement plan, McLaughlin’s speech featured impressive academic achievements and facilities enhancements. “ I am astonished at the transformations occurring in our schools,” said McLaughlin, “The awards we continue to win are shared wholly with my staff and our community, thanks to their commitment and collaboration.”
McLaughlin highlighted the work behind the awards, which includes initiatives designed to increase student engagement, purposeful pathways to college and careers, and intentional learning spaces designed to support 21st-century students. Efforts towards effective employee retention, from recruitment through to retirement, have strengthened in the district, which has been a particular focus given the statewide educational employee shortage. Other successes included improved internal and external communication and a newly revamped food service program, with more meals made fresh and tailored to diverse tastes.
The event was held specifically in the high school gymnasium to showcase the need for more improvements in SLUSD. Several architectural renderings for a potential new gymnasium were shared, while McLaughlin noted his projected work was far from finished. “Our initial inventory for our first strategic plan identified $360 million in need. Measure J1 brought $104 million. We have much left to do, which will require significant community support.” Sustaining projected growth for the district, as well as continuing to raise test scores, will remain focus areas for SLUSD.
Over 200 attendees, including State Senator Nancy Skinner, State Assemblymember Bill Quirk, and Mayor Pauline Cutter, were treated to a performance by the SLHS marching band and breakfast prepared by the SLUSD Food Services Department. After the address, SLHS Principal Dr. Reginald Richardson hosted a tour of facilities at the high school, including the Arts Education Center and broadcasting studio, the career technical education classrooms, and athletic facilities.
