Greetings James Monroe Community,
February is a busy month at Monroe. We are celebrating and learning a lot. We are learning about Black History, Lunar New Year, and our former presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
We will be celebrating Lunar New Year with activities and snacks on February 13th.
We will have a Black History assembly put on by the students and staff on March 5th!
February 17th through February 21st we have President’s week off from school.
We also celebrate two teachers Ms. Saucedo and Mr. Sanders for being selected into the Educational Innovator Program through SLUSD. They will be receiving special tools such as training and new technology, as they fully embrace and implement the new Common Core State Standards!
This year is an exciting year for curriculum and assessment. We will be scaling way back the previous state STAR test, and piloting the new assessments which are based on the new Common Core State Standards. The new assessments will be done on computers, and incorporate more variety including short answer and essay questions. Our computer lab is currently getting configured so that we can do practice tests for the new assessments! This is our year to transition to the new Common Core State Standards and our new assessment! The Common Core State Standards emphasize going deeper in content areas, with a focus on concepts and deep thinking. There is more of an emphasis on non-fiction texts, and real world application to content. These are exciting times to be in school! Stay tuned for more information on the Common Core State Standards!
Many people are going to our school website! There is a lot of information and some pictures of recent schoolwork by Monroe students. Go to the San Leandro Unified School District Website and click on schools. Then go to Monroe on the drop down menu!
This may be a good time to check in with your child’s teacher regarding their progress. Check our website and get your teacher’s email, then send your teacher an email note!
Have a wonderful month, and don’t forget to stop by and say hi!

Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten Registration for the 2014-2015 school year will begin on March 19th from 2 to 4 p.m. You will be able to pick up registration packets from the office starting the first week of March. Children will have to turn 5 years old by September 1st of this year to be eligible for Kindergarten in the fall. If your child’s birthday falls between September 2nd and December 2nd he/she will be eligible for the Transitional Kindergarten program. Packets for Transitional Kindergarten can also be picked up from the office beginning the first week of March.
Yearbooks
Flyers went home to purchase yearbooks. The pre-sale price is $20 before March 8th and $25 after March 8th.
You can pick up more yearbook order forms in the office.
Tardies
Helping your child learn responsibility and the importance of being in school on time is an important lesson for parents to teach. If your child arrives late, it is disruptive to the classroom and causes your child to get off to a poor start. Class begins at 8:10 am. The tardy bell rings at 8:15. Students arriving after that time will be marked tardy.
Student Council News
Our December canned food drive was a success. We collected 343 items. The January activity was warm hat day. It was fun to see so many different types of warm hats. Our February activity is a Candy Heart Counting Contest on February 13th and 14th. Happy Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day from Student Council.
School Store will be Wednesday, February 12th and 26th.
