Greetings James Monroe Community,
Our school year is in full swing. So far we have had many successful school events including Beautification Day and our Pancake Breakfast! Many families came out for these school wide events, making them true community building opportunities. Our PTO and Dad’s Club are fully functioning, supporting our school with successful fundraisers and collaborating with teachers and staff to enrich the lives of our students and families. We now have new James Monroe Sweatshirts for purchase; to show your school pride and keep you warm as we begin to get colder weather.
Coming up we are planning a Winter Community Gathering with a school wide choral concert along with cookies and warm drinks, the evening of December 13th. Save the date and put it in your calendar! You will not want to miss this event.
Our playground is almost completely finished, and the kids are enjoying the new structures and the full use of the yard!
We have a new website, please visit us at www.slusd.us/monroe. At our new website you can find out a lot of information about our school! You can also connect to links for your students to access educational websites from home! We also have an updated calendar for all major school and district events! We hope you visit us at our new website as often as necessary!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and we look forward to welcoming your students back to school on Monday, December 2nd!

Student Council News
Thank you to all the Monroe Eagles who donated money for the Red Cross Philippine Typhoon Disaster Relief Fund. Student Council appreciates your thoughtful support. Everyone had a fun time bringing their stuffed animals to school on Stuffed Animal Day. Our first School Store will be Wednesday, December 11th, at 1:50 P.M., in the front walkway of the school. Our December activity will be a candy cane Math Estimation contest. The closest guesses from the primary and intermediate classes will win candy canes for their class. The Canned Food Drive continues through Dec. 18. Your donations will benefit San Leandro families through the Davis Street Community Center. Thank you, Eagles! Have a great Winter Break. Student Drop Off
Our school was built at a time that most students walked to school. There were no provisions for drop off of students. Now many parents bring their children to school. This causes a lot of congestion, especially in the morning. You can help by leaving home 5 minutes earlier and finding a place away from the school. That way you’ll have plenty of time to get your student to class on time. We have teachers on the yard at 7:55am.
Cold Weather Wear
It appears that cold, rainy days will be with us for some time. Please send your child to school with clothing that will keep them warm and dry. Unless it is raining outside, students will be going out to play during recess breaks. With this cold weather children need to wear jackets or sweaters outside. Please check to make sure all items are marked with your child’s first and last name in case they should get left outside. Remember we still have Monroe Sweatshirts for sale. See the office if you would like to order one.
Please take a moment to mark your child’s name and room number on back packs, jackets and lunch containers.
Yard Duty Supervisors Needed
James Monroe School is in need of paid yard duty supervisors to supervise students in the lunchroom and on the playground from 11:15am-12:45pm daily. Yard supervision is a great way to help the school, stay in contact with your child(ren) and get paid at the same time! You will be required to have finger prints and a current TB immunization. Please contact the school office at (510) 618-4340 if you are interested.
With your help, PTO can help raise money for Monroe students!
